6 months before

  • List all your current doctors and check if they accept Medicare
  • List all your prescription medications (name, dosage, frequency)

3 months before

  • Decide: Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D, or Medicare Advantage?
  • Use Medicare Plan Finder to compare plans in your ZIP code
  • Verify your doctors are in-network for any plan you're considering
  • Verify your medications are on the formulary for any plan you're considering

Birthday month

  • Enroll in Medicare Parts A and B (if not auto-enrolled)
  • Enroll in your chosen Medicare Advantage or Part D plan

After enrollment

  • Review your plan confirmation and member ID card
  • Notify your doctors of your new insurance
  • Set a reminder to review your plan each fall during AEP (Oct 15–Dec 7)
